Valerie Smith is a curator, art historian and writer, working between Europe and New York. She was the curator at Artists Space in the 1980s, after which she co- edited, 5,000 Return to Artists Space: 25 Years. She directed Sonsbeek 93, a major international exhibition in Arnhem, the Netherlands and later returned to New York City as senior curator for the Queens Museum where she curated numerous exhibitions among them, Down the Garden Path, The Artists’ Garden After Modernism (Emily Hall Tremaine Curatorial Award), Joan Jonas, Five Works (International Art Critics Award). As Head of the Visual Arts, Film and Media department at Haus der Kulturen der Welt in Berlin she initiated Labor Berlin, a platform for foreign-born Berliners, curated Rational/Irrational and Between Walls and Windows, Architecture and Ideology, among many other shows. As a freelance she curated Juan Downey: The Invisible Architect, a touring exhibition for MIT, List Visual Arts Center. She is currently teaching at Barnard College, Columbia University, in New York City.
